ESCALADEI CHARTERHOUSE

At the foot of Montsant, the remains of what was the first Carthusian monastery of the Iberian Peninsula can be seen. Founded in the 12th century, it was for many years the place from where the prior managed the territory of the so-called historic priory, which later gave its name to the region of El Priorat. In the 16th-18th centuries, the Carthusian monks undertook a thorough renovation of the monastery and it became the architectural wonder that it is now.
